I'm the quality and brand compliance manager at a plastic sheet manufacturer. Every year I review roughly 200 incoming deliveries—most of them PVC, PET, PS, ABS, PP, acrylic, and polycarbonate sheets or rolls. So far in 2025, I've rejected about 7% of first deliveries for spec mismatches that would have caused problems on the buyer's line. This article is the checklist I wish I could attach to every purchase order.

Plastic vs Thermoplastic: Know What You're Actually Buying

The first thing I check on an order is not the thickness. It's the material naming. Plastic is a broad category; thermoplastic is the more useful spec for sheet products. Under ASTM D883, a thermoplastic is a plastic that can be repeatedly softened by heating and hardened by cooling. That's what makes PVC, PET, PS, ABS, PP, acrylic, and polycarbonate formable, weldable, and, importantly, recyclable. If someone tells you that plastic is plastic, they haven't spent years watching the differences show up in heat and UV.

The comparison that matters when you're choosing a sheet:

  • Thermoplastics like polycarbonate and PET stand up to outdoor exposure better than PS or ABS in many roofing and sign applications.
  • Thermoplastics soften with heat, so a polycarbonate roof sheet can be cold-bent or thermoformed; a thermoset would crack or burn instead.
  • Thermoplastics can be recycled at the end of life. That's increasingly important in building material specs.

Polycarbonate Roof Ordering Checklist

If you're buying sheets for a polycarbonate roof, don't trust the sales sheet. Trust the physical batch. Here's what I recommend in order.

  1. Confirm the UV protection layer. A polycarbonate roof needs a co-extruded UV-absorbing layer on the sun-exposed side. A sprayed-on coating can wear off. If the supplier can't tell you which side faces outward on every panel, that's a problem.
  2. Measure the thickness yourself. In Q1 2024 I rejected a batch because the spec was 6.0 mm and the delivered sheets were 5.7 to 5.9 mm. The vendor said that was within industry tolerance. It wasn't our acceptance standard. The batch was redone at their cost, and now our contracts include thickness measurement as a pass/fail item.
  3. Check the bend radius. Polycarbonate panels are often curved over a roof frame. The minimum cold-bend radius depends on the sheet thickness and the grade of the polycarbonate. Ask for the supplier's published radius data before you design the frame.
  4. Plan for thermal expansion. This is the step most people ignore. Polycarbonate expands roughly 2 mm per meter for a 30°C temperature change, depending on the sheet color and formulation. If you fix the sheet tightly with no expansion gap, it will try to find that space by bowing or cracking. I've seen a beautiful roof panel installation ruined by zero clearance.
  5. Ask for a small sample. Even a 300 mm × 300 mm piece tells you a lot about the protective film, the surface gloss, and how the sheet cuts. The sample should come from the same batch as the production order.

Two Accessories I Don't Let Contractors Skip

Installation details decide whether a polycarbonate roof keeps performing. Two products show up in almost every good installation I've reviewed.

3M silicone tape for sealing details

3M silicone tape is a self-fusing tape that wraps around a substrate and bonds to itself to form a water-resistant, high-temperature barrier. It's not meant to hold the panel up; it's meant to keep water and dirt out of the seam. I use it around penetrations, screwed joints, and places where dissimilar materials meet. The silicone formulation is especially useful on roof applications because it won't simply bake and peel the way ordinary waterproof tape does.

One warning: silicone tape needs tension when you wrap it. If you lay it on flat and expect it to seal, it won't. I've watched crews do this, and they normally find out on the first rain.

3M PE foam tape and foam sheets for cushioning

3M PE foam is closed-cell polyethylene foam, usually supplied as double-sided tape or as a thin foam sheet with a pressure-sensitive adhesive. For a polycarbonate roof, it solves a specific problem: vibration between the plastic sheet and the metal frame. Polycarbonate moves with temperature. If it sits directly against a sharp purlin edge, the movement scores the sheet. That score becomes a stress crack later. A strip of 3M PE foam tape absorbs vibration and keeps the edges clean.

I remember a repair job where a contractor skipped the foam tape to save about $50. The sheets rattled against the purlins over one winter, and the corners chipped. Replacement material plus labor cost roughly $800. Penny-wise, pound-foolish.

How to Use a Plastic Cleaner Without Damaging the Sheet

Now for the step most order specs write as an afterthought: cleaning. A plastic cleaner isn't a luxury; it's a performance decision. For polycarbonate, the wrong cleaner can cause fine surface cracks known as crazing. Those cracks spread after rain, ice, and sun.

  1. Match the cleaner to the plastic. Use a dedicated plastic cleaner or a pH-neutral soap solution for polycarbonate and acrylic. Avoid ammonia, alcohol, acetone, and harsh solvent blends. Even a general multi-surface spray can contain solvents that attack polycarbonate.
  2. Check the label for pH value. If the manufacturer doesn't state pH, don't use it on a polycarbonate roof without testing first.
  3. Choose the right cloth. A soft microfiber cloth is better than a paper towel or a brush. The real enemy is trapped dirt, not the liquid.
  4. Spot-test before full cleaning. In a Q3 2024 test, I cleaned 20 polycarbonate samples with common household products. The ammonia-based general cleaner caused visible fogging on the polycarbonate immediately. The dedicated plastic cleaner and a mild soap solution left the surface clear.
  5. Clean before installation, not after. If you clean after the edge sealants are in place, you push grime into the joint areas. That reduces sealant adhesion and creates a road map for future streaking.

Small Orders Are Test Orders, Not Annoyances

I want to say this directly because I know it happens in this industry: small orders get treated like second-class work by some suppliers. That's a mistake. When I was starting out, the vendors who took my small $200 orders seriously are the ones I still use for $20,000 orders today. A 50-sheet order might be a company trying a new product line. It might be a contractor doing a roof repair. It might be a school project. None of those should get low-grade material or dismissive service.

At our factory, a small order gets the same incoming check, same certifications, and same installation notes as a big contract. The quantity is different; the acceptance standard isn't.

Final QC Check Before You Accept a Delivery

If you're responsible for signing off on plastic sheets, this is the receiving check I use. It takes about five minutes per pallet, and it's saved us months of headaches.

  1. Let the material acclimate. If the sheets arrive cold from a truck, don't start measuring immediately. Thermoplastics move with temperature. Give them at least an hour to stabilize.
  2. Measure thickness at multiple points. Corners and center, not just the end that's easy to reach.
  3. Inspect the surface at a glancing angle. Look for waviness, scratches, and die marks under indirect light.
  4. Check the protective film. It should be adhered evenly and have a batch label that matches the delivery paperwork. If the film looks yellowed or brittle, that's a red flag.
  5. Verify the accessories. If you're working on a polycarbonate roof and the plan calls for 3M silicone tape and 3M PE foam tape, confirm the tapes are fresh. Old PE foam loses adhesion, and old silicone tape can have a crumbly edge from storage.

One last thing: when a supplier says 'it's within industry standard,' ask what standard they mean and ask them to write the measurement in the packing slip. In our case, adding written thickness requirements to every contract reduced our incoming rejection rate by 60% within two quarters. It's not about being difficult. It's about giving both sides a clear pass/fail line before the production line stops.
