When the job is done, toss the liner with the leftovers. No more pouring solvent in the gun cup and letting it sit for twenty minutes to soften cured clearcoat.

I called it a gimmick the first time I saw the price. Then, in March 2024, a body shop called wanting three jobs painted the same day with one gun. I watched a painter go from one color to another in about five minutes, just by swapping the 3M PPS 2.0 liner. The old way would have taken close to an hour in cleanup across three colors.

Can I use a Dremel rubber wheel for paint prep and adhesive removal?

Depends entirely on the wheel. I learned this the hard way. I assumed there was basically one Dremel rubber wheel — a soft rubber cylinder that smoothed things out. Then I melted part of a plastic trim piece because the wheel I used generated friction heat that the part couldn't take.

There are different types: silicone polishing wheels, abrasive-impregnated rubber wheels, and eraser-style wheels for scrubbing off old adhesive. A polishing-style wheel is not for removing 3M body filler; it will just load up. A rubber eraser wheel in a Dremel is useful for taking adhesive residue off paint or trim, if you keep the speed low and let the wheel do the work. On flexible PP plastic, keep the Dremel moving. Once you see rubber particles building up or smell burning plastic, stop.

How long do adhesive rubber strips last?

Longer than the attachment method, usually. By adhesive rubber strips, I mean rubber or EPDM foam strips with a pressure-sensitive adhesive backing, the kind used to attach side moldings, door edge guards, and trim.

The strip's rubber can last for years. The failure point is almost always the bond. Surface prep matters more than the cure time. Looking back, the times I saw trim come loose were almost always installs where someone wiped the panel once with a dry rag and stuck the strip over wax or silicone. Temperature and pressure matter too. Clean the panel with isopropyl alcohol, let it dry, and press the strip down with firm, even pressure. If you need to speed things up, warm the strip slightly before application. Warm adhesive flows better, but don't apply it over ice-cold paint and expect it to grab.

What is 5 PP plastic?

5 PP plastic is polypropylene, marked with a number 5 inside the plastic resin identification code. The number-and-letter combination comes from the resin identification coding standard (ASTM D7611). The PP stands for polypropylene. It's one of the most common plastics in the world: battery boxes, bottle caps, food containers, and a lot of car interior and bumper trim.

If you're working in a body shop, the important part is that PP has low surface energy. Ordinary primer, paint, and body filler won't grip it well. You can sand PP and it can feel rough, but the material is chemically 'slippery'. That's why polypropylene parts need special adhesion promoters or flame/plasma treatment before coating.

Don't confuse it with ABS, which is also used on car trim but paints very differently. The recycling code is your clue. If the part says 5 PP, treat it as polypropylene.

Does 3M body filler stick to 5 PP plastic?

Not directly, no. 3M body fillers are polyester fillers, and they're made for metal, fiberglass, SMC, and some other rigid substrates. Bare polypropylene is too low-energy for polyester filler to bite into. You might get it to stay overnight, but after temperature cycling or a light bump, it can come off in one unfortunate sheet.

To repair a 5 PP bumper or trim piece, use an adhesion promoter made for polypropylene, or use a plastic repair product designed for flexible bumpers. Once you have a proper epoxy or urethane plastic repair in place and it's sanded, you can usually proceed with the same primer and topcoat system you'd use on the rest of the car.

I've watched a customer come back a week later with 3M body filler flaking off a new bumper. The shop skipped the promoter to save an hour. That's a classic case of saving time in the short run and paying for it twice.

What should I stock for a regular rush repair?

If I were setting up a bench from scratch, my first order would be: a tub of 3M body filler, a 3M PPS 2.0 liner refill, an adhesion promoter for polypropylene, and an eraser wheel for the Dremel. Adhesive rubber strips? Keep a short roll in black in several widths, but only if you know what you're going to attach.
